Dave Nilsson homered and drove in a career-high five runs and Dave Stewart was rocked again as Milwaukee routed Oakland for its fifth straight victory.

Stewart (3-7), who has won just once in his last 13 outings, gave up three homers and eight earned runs in two innings. He hasn’t won since June 4 and is 2-6 with a 10.38 ERA away from home.

Nilsson had a three-run homer in the first, an RBI single in the fourth and a sacrifice fly in the fifth as the Brewers handed the A’s their fifth straight loss.

Orioles 3, Rangers 2 (13)

Arlington, Texas

Rafael Palmeiro homered into the upper deck in right field in the top of the 13th inning as Baltimore defeated Texas.

The 418-foot shot off Dennis Cook (0-1) was only the third ball hit into the upper deck at The Ballpark this season.

Six Baltimore relievers held Texas without a hit the final eight innings. Mark Lee (1-0) got his first major-league victory since 1991.

Angels 8, Indians 3

Cleveland

J.T. Snow homered, doubled, singled twice and drove in four runs and Brian Anderson limited his hometown team to three runs in 6 2/3 innings as California beat Cleveland.

The Angels, leaders of the A.L. West, extended their winning streak to five games while stopping Cleveland’s winning streak at four. California ended a string of seven losses against the Indians dating to July of 1993.

Royals 4, Red Sox 3

Boston

Jeff Suppan got a rude welcome to the majors when Keith Lockhart led off the game with a homer as Kansas City spoiled the debut of Boston’s top pitching prospect.

Lockhart also singled and scored the Royals’ second run of the game in the third inning as they won for just the sixth time in 20 games.

Mark Gubicza (7-7) allowed only two runners in the first five innings, but left with two outs in the sixth after giving up two runs. Jeff Montgomery pitched 1 1/3 innings for his 16th save.

Yankees, White Sox, ppd.

New York

The game between Chicago and New York was called because of rain with the score tied 1-1 in the bottom of the seventh inning.

It will be made up as part of a twi-night doubleheader today, although the statistics will count and the game will go in the books as a tie.

Milwaukee nears deal

A plan for a new $223 million stadium for the Milwaukee Brewers might be finalized within days.

The stadium financing plan under discussion among Gov. Tommy G. Thompson and city, county and team officials is seen as a last chance to keep the Brewers from leaving town.
