Orth Takes First Place In Shooting

Spokane shooter Robin Orth finished first in the finals of the Olympic Festival Shooting at the Olympic Training Center Saturday in Colorado Springs, Colo.

In the 10-meter air rifle category, Orth fired a score of 687.9 out of a possible 709 points.

Orth edged Kurt Fitz-Randolph of Starksville, Miss. He posted a score of 687.5

In the women’s 10-meter air pistol category, Jessica Ellis of Kent finished first with a score of 470.3 out of a possible 509 total points.

AAU basketball

The Spokane Stars 15-U AAU National team earned a split in games played Saturday at Indianapolis. After losing to the Oklahoma Elites 72-65, the Stars bounced back to beat the Houston Hotshots 72-60.

Stars coach Greg Cory thought his team was a little nervous.

“The kids have never played to gether before and the inexperience is really showing,” Cory said.

Against the Elites, Crystal Lee paced the Stars with 13 points while Jennifer Williams scored 20.

Spokane plays Kansas today and then takes on New England Monday.

Legion baseball

Washington Trust Bank beat Pullman 11-6 and 6-4 at Central Valley. In the first game, Pullman gave up 13 walks and hit two batters. WTB scored 10 runs on one hit in the third inning.

In the second game, WTB’s Matt Comfort had three hits in a 13-hit attack.

At Chewelah, Scott’s Custom Homes beat the North Stars 6-4 before the North Stars won the second game 5-4.

In the first game, Mark Miller hit a pair of two-run homers, one in the first inning and the other in the seventh. The homer in the seventh scored the winning runs for Scott’s.

In the second game, the North Stars’ Brent Naccarato went 4 for 5 in the win.

At Clarkston, Spokane Federal Credit Union hammered PAC 10-1 and 24-3. SFCU pitcher Tucker Urdahl allowed three hits and struck out 11.

Volleyball

In the Mizuno All-State High School Volleyball A/B contest at Fife, the West defeated the East 15-4, 15-5, 11-15, 15-8.

For the East, Jennifer Stinson had 16 kills, five digs and two blocks while teammate Heather Almond had eight kills and three digs.

In the AAA/AA match, the West defeated the East 15-3, 15-9, 15-7. For the East, Kim Kleven finished with 10 assists and Kelly Bartleson had 10 digs.
