Candidates Respond As Deadline Nears For Ballot

Dozens of candidates flocked to the Spokane County Courthouse Monday to file for offices that will be on this fall’s election ballots.

By day’s end, the Spokane City Council had at least one candidate for each of the three open seats.

A three-way race had already developed for the Council seat being vacated by Joel Crosby. Roberta Greene, Robert Schroeder and Larry Bacon each filed for that position.

A Spokane Valley legislative seat had three candidates and an open Spokane School District 81 board position had a pair of candidates.

The legislative seat and a Spokane County commissioner’s position are on the ballot this fall because Rep. Mike Padden and Commissioner Skip Chilberg resigned earlier this year to take other jobs.

Candidates seeking spots on city and town councils, school boards and fire, water, sewer or cemetery districts have until 5 p.m. Friday to file for office.

If the job comes with a salary, candidates must pay a fee equal to 1 percent of the annual salary for the office or submit a petition with the signature of one registered voter for each dollar of the filing fee. Voters signing the petition must live in the city or district the candidate wants to represent.
