Military Persons Receive Promotions, Awards

Petty officer 3rd class Cassandra Van Houtan, daughter of Joseph and Judy Van Houtan, Spokane, has been promoted to her present rank. She is stationed with the Navy on the USS Abraham Lincoln and is a 1990 graduate of Mead High School.

The following military persons have been commissioned as second lieutenants:

John Moffitt, is assigned to Fort McClellan, Ala. He is the son of Charles Moffitt and Catherine Kornmeyer, both of Spokane. He is a 1991 graduate of Lewis and Clark High School and a 1995 graduate of West Point Military Academy.

Brice Johnnie-Lee Williams, son of Candice Bush, Post Falls, and the late Johnnie-Lee Williams, has been named a 1995 Distinguished Graduate at the Air Force Academy. He will begin his master’s-degree work in Washington, D.C.

Christian Cannon, is assigned to Fort Gordon, Ga. He is the son of June Kinney, Cheney, and is a 1991 graduate of Mead High School and a 1995 graduate of West Point Military Academy.

The following military personnel have received awards:

Seaman Recruit Jason Descoteaux, son of Richard and Judith Descoteaux, Kettle Falls, Wash., received the Military Order of the World Wars Award, upon graduation from Navy Basic Training, Great Lakes, Ill.

Petty Officer 1st Class Mitchel Welsh, son of Lena Powell, Kennewick, was named Sailor of the Year at the Naval Command Control and Ocean Surveillance Center, Norfolk, Va.

Staff Sgt. Tammy Robel, daughter of Lynn Sturn, Spokane, and Robert Robel, Medical Lake, has been decorated with the Air Force Commendation Medal. He is stationed at Hickam Air Force Base, Honolulu, and is a 1987 graduate of Cheney High School.

Capt. Jeffrey Jacques, received his silver wings upon graduation from pilot training at Laughlin Air Force Base, Del Rio, Texas. He is a 1986 graduate of Shadle Park High School and the son of Pete and Madelyn Jacques, Olympia.

Capt. Ronald Maines has been named Company Grade Officer of the Quarter. He is a flight chief stationed at Fairchild Air Force Base.

Sgt. David McDaniels, son of Mary and Roland McDaniels, Spokane, has been decorated with the Army Achievement Medal. He is stationed in Korchgoens, Germany.

Catlin Goodrow, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Goodrow, Spokane, is a member of the Cornell Women’s Choir, Mount Vernon, Iowa.

John Ahrens, cadet at the Military Academy at West Point, was inducted into the honorary fraternity Phi Kappa Phi and named to the Dean’s List and Dean’s Distinguished Cadet List. He is training this summer at the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico, followed by six weeks in South Korea, then will return to West Point to continue his senior year in aerospace engineering. He is a 1992 graduate of University High School and the son of John and Sylvia Ahrens, Spokane.

The Spokane Public Relations Council announced that United Way of Spokane County was awarded the 1994 Dussault Award for its Day of Caring. The program, sponsored by eight local businesses, provided needed care on one day at nine United Way agencies.
