North Idaho Man Faces Bomb Charges Agents Think The Bomb May Have Been For Suicide Attempt

A 23-year-old North Idaho man caught with a pipe bomb in the Spokane Valley is being held in jail without bond after a detention hearing in U.S. District Court.

Jeremy R. Oscarson, of Oldtown, was ordered detained Wednesday after U.S. Magistrate Cynthia Imbrogno determined he posed a danger or could flee.

Oscarson is charged in a federal criminal complaint with possession of a pipe bomb.

He was arrested by Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco & Firearms agents after his car was stopped early on July 19 at Trent and Fancher.

In the same incident, Oscarson was arrested for driving with a suspended license by sheriff’s deputies, who found a 4-inch-long pipe bomb in the car.

The investigation continues, but ATF agents say the suspect may have intended to use the pipe bomb to commit suicide.

A handgun also was found in the car.

The explosive device, equipped with a fuse, was removed by a bomb squad and safely exploded on a munitions range.

A passenger in Oscarson’s car, identified by authorities as James L. Dempsey, 51, was arrested on state charges of felony possession of methamphetamine.

The case is the latest in a recent series of pipe bomb discoveries by authorities in the region.

Richard Damon Dominguez, also known as Richard D. Snyder, 20, of Coeur d’Alene, also is in federal custody in Spokane for possessing a pipe bomb.

He was arrested July 11 at an Interstate 90 rest stop in Adams County by a state trooper who found a pipe bomb in a car allegedly stolen in Coeur d’Alene.
