Crisis Team Helps School Deal With Death Of Teen Halls Are ‘Pretty Quiet’ After Crash Kills Post Falls Athlete
A crisis team spent Friday in the library and halls of Post Falls High School counseling students and staff grieving over the death of Christina Rose Finney.
Finney, who was to graduate next week, died Thursday in a two-car accident at a Post Falls intersection.
The collision happened not far from the school. Classes had just ended for the day.
“Several kids stopped by and they would recognize the truck,” said Idaho State Police Sgt. Clyde Kaffenberger. “It was a pretty traumatic scene.”
About 12 to 15 counselors, clergy, staff members and parents spent the day helping dozens of Finney’s friends and teachers cope with the loss of the popular senior track star and Post Falls Junior Miss.
“It’s pretty quiet,” said Superintendent Dick Harris. “The usual talk and chatter in the hall is minimal. … Certainly, a lot of kids are crying.”
School administrators imposed a strict rule keeping outsiders, primarily the media, off-campus. Parents were allowed on campus to help or seek counseling.
The crisis team also met after school to prepare for next week, anticipating the return of students involved in the accident or friends of Finney’s who may have been too upset to attend school Friday.
The accident occurred when another student, 16-year-old Danielle Muncey, apparently failed to yield at a stop sign at the intersection of Lincoln Street and Mullan Avenue, according to the ISP.
Muncey was driving south on Lincoln Street while Finney, 18, was driving east on Mullan Avenue.
Muncey’s Subaru collided with Finney’s pickup truck. Finney, who was not wearing a seat belt, was thrown from her vehicle. The pickup rolled, striking her and causing fatal head wounds, according to the police report. She died at the scene.
Muncey was taken to the hospital and was treated and released. Two of her three passengers were also taken to the hospital.
Camille Muncey, 17, and Sean Garrison, 15, were treated and released. Michelle Muncey, 14, was not injured.
Danielle Muncey has not been cited. The Kootenai County prosecutor will decide whether to file criminal charges, Kaffenberger said.
