Cougars Add Forward; Tri-City Shuffles Gm
Power forward Cameron Johnson, a junior transfer from Utah Valley State College, has signed a financial agreement to play basketball for Washington State this fall.
It gives men’s coach Kevin Eastman 10 scholarship athletes.
“We were looking for someone who could provide a lot of muscle down low,” Eastman said of the 6-foot-7, 215-pound Johnson. “We have three good players coming back in that position and thought we needed a fourth in terms of the rotation.”
Last season, Johnson, who returned from a two-year mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, averaged 12 points and eight rebounds for UVSC’s 22-10 squad that lost to the College of Southern Idaho in the Region 18 Tournament semifinals.
He led the team in blocked shots and was named its defensive player of the year.
Hockey
Bob Brown wasn’t out of work long. But now Dennis Beyak is jobhunting.
Brown, fired last week by the Kamloops Blazers after nine years as general manager of the highly successful Western Hockey League team, was hired by the Tri-City Americans as director of operations for both the WHL team and Tri-Cities Coliseum.
Ron Toigo, majority owner of both the Americans and coliseum, who made the announcement, said that Beyak was released as general manager of the Americans.
Under Brown, 51, Kamloops won .693 percent of its games, four WHL titles and three Memorial Cups, those coming in the last four seasons.
Motor sports
Joie Chitwood’s Chevy Thunder Show tour will be at State Line Speedway July 6 at 7 p.m.

Bowling
A West Coast Senior Bowling Tour event, the Sandpoint Open, will be held Saturday at Sandpoint Bowl.
It’s the second year the tour has stopped in Sandpoint. As many as 75 men 46 and older are expected.
After each entrant bowls eight qualifying games, the top 12 advance to match-play finals Sunday. The top four to eight in the Super Seniors (57 and over) also advance to Sunday.
Idaho prep softball
As expected, the Idaho High School Activities Association board voted Monday to make the state tournament a sanctioned event for girls beginning in 1996-97.
Each classification will decide whether it will play fastpitch or slowpitch.
