Mark Gubicza pitched a one-hitter, allowing only a fourth-inning single to Mark McGwire, and led the Kansas City Royals over the Oakland Athletics 7-0 Thursday at Oakland, Calif.

The Royals have won 16 of their last 20.

Detroit

Detroit took advantage of rookie Brian Boehringer’s wildness and Cecil Fielder hit his 14th homer as Detroit clobbered New York.

Boehringer, making his first major league start, walked seven in four-plus innings. Five of the walks figured in the scoring.

Anaheim, Calif.

Rookie Garret Anderson had three hits and drove in two runs to help California beat Chicago.

The Angel’s Lee Smith tied his own major league mark of getting saves in 17 straight appearances.
