Former Lewis And Clark Coach Keeps Things All In The Family

From Staff Reports

Former Lewis and Clark High School boys basketball coach Larry Walker was more than an interested observer at the girls State AAA tournament.

As a community college coach and parent, the stakes were personal. “I have two daughters playing for Marysville-Pilchuck,” said Walker, who compiled a 73-55 GSL league record with the Tigers from 1977-85.

He’s in his 10th year of coaching at Everett Community College and is also athletic director at the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges school. His team reached the NWAACC final.

His daughter Julie, a 5-foot-6 sophomore, averaged 12.5 points per game for the Tomahawks and his daughter Kelli, a 5-6 junior, scored 5.2 points per game.

His son Darrell, who may play for his dad at Everett, was a three-year starter and double-figure scorer this year for Marysville. He was also a second-team two-way all-conference football player.

District 3 takes beating

There’s not necessarily strength in numbers.

The state’s largest district took the biggest beating on the first day of the State AAA. District 3, the combined 30-school South Puget Sound, Narrows and Olympic leagues, lost 10 of its allotted 12 state tournament games on the first day of boys and girls play.

The two winners were girls semifinalist Kent-Meridian, which beat cold-shooting Shadle Park, and Foss, which beat Marysville-Pilchuck 37-35 in the night’s ugliest game. It was a tourney record for the lowest winning score.

Combined Districts 1 and 2 with 22 teams and 10 berths won eight openers.Eastern Washington’s 18 schools in combined Districts 5, 6 and 8 were awarded six berths and won half.

Well-traveled Braves

It’s hard to explain where WIAA geographers came up with the location for Kamiakin.

On the map that accompanies the boys’ team picture and roster in the AAA program, the eastern Washington high school supposedly hails from Mukilteo, in northwest Washington town. The girls are rightly located in Kennewick.
