Woman Suffers Injuries From Apartment Fire

A Spokane woman suffered burns to her arms and back in an apartment fire Thursday.

Terry McGee, 24, was in satisfactory condition Tuesday at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. She was burned over 15 percent of her body, said a hospital spokesman.

The fire, which gutted the house at 1124 W. Maxwell, started about 8:20 a.m. in McGee’s first-floor apartment, said Battalion Chief Dick Schuerman of the Spokane Fire Department.

“She came running out and was on fire. (A friend) rushed her to the hospital” before firefighters arrived, Schuerman said.

The fire quickly spread to the second and third floors of the house, which had been converted into four apartment units, Schuerman said.

“It (the house) was just a maze,” he said. “It’d been broken into apartments, it’d been remodeled, it was very difficult to get into all the nooks.”

Investigators have not determined the cause of the fire, though Schuerman said arson is not suspected.
