2 Games In A Day Take Toll

AA notebook

Mount Vernon didn’t harbor any ill will toward Gig Harbor.

Yet the Bulldogs had to play two games in one day because of Gig Harbor’s actions.

Gig Harbor was scheduled to play the 5 p.m. game Thursday at the girls State AA basketball tournament. Expecting a smooth, 20-minute bus ride to the Tacoma Dome, the Tides were in for a surprise.

Blustery winds on the Narrows Bridge toppled a trailer being towed by a semitruck. The mishap backed up traffic - including the GH bus for 45 minutes.

As a result of Gig Harbor’s late arrival, the night schedule took a beating. Cheney’s 8 p.m. quarterfinal against Chief Sealth started later than 9. Mount Vernon’s loser-out win over Lakeside dragged on until 12:35 Friday morning.

Mount Vernon left the Dome at 1 a.m. Many players didn’t fall asleep until after 2 a.m., pondering another game in less than 12 hours.

“We had to get up by 11, so that wasn’t bad,” said guard Katie Gamble. “But you don’t feel like eating then, so that was hard.”

Although weary, MV survived a slow start to top Eastmont 64-56.

“We often play a little better when we’re tired because we don’t feel as tense,” coach Emil Whitman said.

The girl has range

Nobody could remember a longer basket than the one Cheney’s Anna Getz swished at the halftime buzzer on Thursday.

Getz, a point guard, took an inbounds pass with 0.6 seconds left and overhanded a basket from an estimated 83 feet.

“I just let it fly, and it went in,” Getz said matter-of-factly.

Coach Marty Jessett said Getz is a frequent winner during halfcourt-shooting contests in practice.

Getz finished the tourney’s second day as the assists leader with five per game. However, she injured her right knee in Thursday’s third quarter and is not expected to play again this season.

The beat goes on

Who could have imagined a minor hit by Gary Glitter in the early 1970s would become the most popular band song at a tournament some 20 years later?

The rousing tune is “Rock and Roll, Part 2,” better known as the “Hey” song. The fans display their ability to cheer “Hey” after the infectious drum solo.

Minute detail

During the Colville boys’ two games here, Matt Smith didn’t repeat the numbers (23.2 ppg) that made him the top scorer coming into the tourney.

But the seven players who had scored more than Smith (31) after two days also logged more minutes. Foul trouble limited Smith to 57 minutes.

Colville exited as the top team for blocked shots (11), but second-worst for turnovers (43).

Better make that collect

Travis Lindstrom of Capital, who scored seven points during Wednesday’s win over Colville, calls Australia to talk to his dad.
