White Sox Slam Troubled Reliever With Suspension
Reliever Rob Dibble was suspended from the Chicago White Sox on Sunday for inappropriate conduct.
No details were given, and general manager Ron Schueler said in Sarasota, Fla., that he won’t reinstate Dibble until he talks to the player’s agent.
Dibble, whom the White Sox signed to a minorleague contract this year, pitched with Cincinnati last year and is a two-time National League All-Star. He has not appeared in replacement games.
Angels trim Mariners
Tony Mack pitched seven innings, the longest of any California starter this spring, as the Angels beat the Seattle Mariners 6-4 in exhibition play at Tempe, Ariz., for their fifth straight victory.
Tyrone Boykin, hitting .341 this spring, hit a runscoring single in the sixth inning to ignite a four-run rally.
Mack (2-2) allowed seven hits and two runs, one earned, while walking none and striking out two. Manager Marcel Lachemann said Mack moved into contention for the Angels’ opening-day assignment with his performance.
Japanese pitcher debuts
Hideo Nomo, the former star of the Japanese League, threw batting practice for the first time since the Los Angeles Dodgers signed him to a minorleague contract that included a $2 million signing bonus.
Nomo, 26, who won 78 games over five seasons pitching for the Kintetesu Buffaloes of the Pacific League, threw nothing but fastballs during his 35-pitch workout in Vero Beach, Fla.
Nomo attracted a crowd of about 25 reporters from Japan and the United States, plus a full contingent of Dodgers personnel, including club president Peter O’Malley, executive vice president Fred Claire and manager Tom Lasorda.
Rose, Boyd stand out
Pete Rose Jr. drove in two runs and Dennis “Oil Can” Boyd pitched five scoreless innings as the Chicago White Sox defeated the Detroit Tigers 4-1 in an exhibition in Sarasota, Fla.
Boyd (2-1) gave up six hits and two walks, striking out two in his sixth start of the spring.
