Idaho Library Association Names Award Recipients

The Idaho Library Association recently announced the following people had received awards:

Martin Trail, a trustee at the Latah County Free Library District, is Idaho’s Trustee of the Year. He has served on the library board for eight years and has provided excellent leadership through his qualities of caring, compassion and a high degree of professionalism. He presided over the successful merging of the two independent boards of the Moscow-Latah County Library System and the Latah County Free Library District was created.

Chris Ashby, librarian at Lewis Clark State College, Lewiston, is a joint recipient of the Special Services to Libraries Award. She has served as a site coordinator for the University of Arizona Master’s of Library Science program. She has given students from Idaho and eastern Washington an opportunity to receive American Library Association accredited graduate library school education.

Elizabeth Hammond, Pullman, is a senior at Amherst College, Mass., and is the recipient of a fellowship awarded by the Thomas J. Watson Foundation. She is one of 60 graduating seniors from 50 small liberal arts colleges throughout the U.S. to receive the prestigious Watson Fellowship. She has a double major in Spanish and English with a concentration in film. Next year, she will study the workings of television stations in Mexico and Venezuela as part of a project entitled: “Women and Telenovelas: Understanding Latin American Soap Opera.”

Cpl. Laurie Anderson, son of Kenneth and Christine Anderson, Moscow, Idaho, was promoted to her present rank while serving with the Marine Corps at Camp Pendleton, Calif. She is a 1992 graduate of Moscow High School.

Maj. Michael Sessions, a 1973 graduate of Shadle Park High School, received the Navy Commendation Medal while serving with the Marine Corps Security Detachment on the island of Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean. He was recognized for his outstanding service as the detachment’s commanding officer.

Seaman Recruit Shawn Vannieuwenhoven, son of Ken and Marti Vannieuwenhoven, Liberty Lake, was commended, along with his company, for demonstrating exemplary performance at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. He is stationed with the Navy aboard the USS Princeton.
