Club Pro Shares Lead
Stephen Keppler, a local club pro, shot a 5-under-par 67 and gained a share of the lead with Jim Gallagher Jr. after the third round of the BellSouth Classic in Marietta, Ga.
Keppler, 34, a British citizen who played college golf at Florida State and elected to be a club pro when his one year on the European PGA Tour wasn’t fruitful, had four birdies in a row on the back side and capped his round with a 35-foot birdie putt on the final hole.
Gallagher, who had shared the firstround lead, posted a 68, leaving the leaders with a 13-under-par 203 for three trips around the hilly 7,018-yard Atlanta Country Club course.
Second-round leader and defending champion John Daly struggled to a 71 that, he admitted, could have been much worse. Daly is two strokes off the lead. Pullman’s Kirk Triplett shot 70 and is at 211.
Laura Davies shot a 3-under-par 69 to stay one stroke ahead of Michelle McGann at the $525,000 Sara Lee Classic in Nashville, Tenn.
Bob Murphy took the lead at the PaineWebber Seniors Invitational in Charlotte, N.C., with a 6-under-par 66 that left him at 10-under 134.
