Radio Charlie Ready To Rock Berlin

Compiled From Wire Services

Offering American news, culture and good old rock ‘n’ roll as a bridge across the Atlantic, the first U.S.-German radio station hit Berlin’s airwaves Saturday.

U.S. Ambassador Charles E. Redman and Berlin Mayor Eberhard Diepgen joined at Pariser Square, the future site of the U.S. Embassy, to press the symbolic red button that launched Radio Charlie, named for the U.S. checkpoint between the city’s east and west sectors before the Berlin wall fell.

The station is a project of Voice of America and Capital Radio, Berlin’s leading private broadcaster.

Radio Charlie replaces the American Forces Network and broadcasts on the same frequency.
