Colfax Jumper Doubles Up On Crowns In District 7-A

A/B track

Laura Widman of Colfax won the long jump and high jump Friday on the first day of the District 7-A track and field meet at Central Valley.

Widman cleared 5-foot-3 in the high jump and beat the field by 11 inches with a 16-4 long jump.

Riverside’s Ramona Peterson, with a 107-3 discus, and Medical Lake’s Amie Poteet, 11 minutes and 56.6 seconds in the 3,200 meters, won the other girls’ finals of the day.

Chewelah dominated the boys’ finals, with Greg Belzer winning the shot put at 52-11 1/4, Greg Rainer taking the javelin in 168-0 and Chris Frizzell winning the 1,600 in 4:31.7.

Anthony Hayes of Colfax won the long jump at 21-7 1/2.

The top two in each final of the meet that ends today at CV qualify for next weekend’s State A/B meet in Yakima.

District 7-B

Morgan Chase of Republic set three boys’ meet records and won all four of his events at Riverside.

Chase set records in the 100 (11.0), 110 hurdles (14.7) and 300 hurdles (38.0). He also won the 200, in 22.7.

However, the Tigers, with 77 points, were a distant fourth behind champion Springdale’s 121.

Springdale had wins from Jeff Carr in the 400 (51.4), Mits Bryant in the 800 (2:03.2), Cliff Matherly in the triple jump (41-8 3/4) and its 400 relay (45.3).

St. George’s Christian Laugen won the 1,600 and 3,200.

Edie DeNiro won the 1,600 (5:39.2) and 3,200 (12:16.2) to lead St. George’s to the girls’ title with 104 points.

Also winning for the Dragons were Dawn Trowbridge, a meet-record 58.5 in the 400, and Chrissy Peterson, a meet-record 46.5 in the 300 hurdles.

Ritzville finished second with 82 points as Robin Phipps won the 100 hurdles (15.4), shot put (38-1/2) and long jump (15-10 1/2), and Katie Phipps won the 100 (12.8) and 200 (25.7).

Liberty’s Shauna Polione won the 800 (2:28.5) and triple jump (33-7 1/4).
