10-Year-Old Hit In Eye With Friend’s Arrow

From Staff And Wire Reports

A 10-year-old Coeur d’Alene boy went into surgery Saturday after a playmate shot him in the eye with an arrow, said Coeur d’Alene police officials.

A doctor removed a sliver of wood from Joseph Shields’ cornea but was unsure whether the boy would regain normal vision, according to a police report.

A witness told police that Shields and his 10-year-old friend were playing on the 1500 block of Mullan Ave. As Shields was climbing up on top of a carport, the friend used a bow to shoot an arrow from about 20 feet away.

The boy told police that he was trying to hit a can but accidentally hit his friend. The arrow ricocheted and hit Shields, according to the police report.

Capt. Carl Bergh said police are questioning the youth. It is against city law to fire a gun or a bow and arrow within city limits, he said.
