Crews Battle Blaze Near Kellogg

A four-acre fire gobbled up state lands near Kellogg, late Sunday night, dancing along the north ridge that overlooks the town, Shoshone County Fire Department officials said.

The fire started near Vergobbi Gulch and moved west toward Kellogg High School and Jacob’s Gulch, officials said.

“At this time, it’s not threatening any structures,” said a fire department dispatcher who wouldn’t give his name.

Firefighters late Sunday planned to dig a fire line around the fire and “reattack in the morning,” the dispatcher said.

Several firefighters would be on hand all night in case of wind shifts, he said.

A teenager firing shots near the flames attracted the attention of firefighters and sheriff’s deputies, the dispatcher said, adding that the deputies took the teen away to “talk to him.”

The shots didn’t scare the firefighters as much as “tick them off,” the dispatcher said.
