Pope John Paul II urged moviemakers Sunday to show a greater sense of “authentic values.”

In his regular Sunday address, the pope said the mass media can be a vehicle for “truth, solidarity, authentic love, or the means of manipulation, even violence or the vulgar exploitation of man’s basest instincts.”

Thus, the sense of responsibility of the “promoters of social communications” should grow, he said, particularly with regard to the cinema on its 100th anniversary.

“I hope that it, honoring its best traditions, will become ever more a vehicle of culture and a proposal of authentic values.”
