Nemechek Wins Pole

Compiled From Wire Services

Joe Nemechek will start from the pole position, alongside David Green in an all-Chevy front row for the Jiffy Lube Miami 300 Grand National stock car race in Homestead, Fla., today.

Nemechek’s track-qualifying record of 134.628 mph on Friday was broken in the second round of time trials by Dale Jarrett, who turned a lap of 134.875 in a Ford Thunderbird. But Jarrett’s second-day qualifying attempt eliminates him from pole contention and he will start 26th.

While Johnny Benson already has locked away the Grand National championship, second place is up for grabs. Runner-up Chad Little, from Spokane, leads Mike McLaughlin by only 17 points. McLaughlin will start 12th and Little 19th.
