Propane Heater Asphyxiates Hunter
One elk hunter died and his brother was being treated for carbon monoxide poisoning, apparently from a propane heater, Skamania County sheriff’s deputies reported.
A statement issued Tuesday by Deputy Chuck Bryan said Clarence W. Force Jr., 46, of Avis, Pa., died in a tent where he and his brother, Daniel Force, 42, of Mill Hall, Pa., were camping in the northern part of the county.
They were found Monday by Daniel Force’s son, Michael Force, stationed at Fort Lewis near Tacoma.
Daniel Force was flown to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. He was in satisfactory condition Tuesday.
The statement said a storm dropped eight to 10 inches of snow on the Forces’ campsite, covering plastic they had thrown over their tents and trapping fumes from the heater inside.
