Blades’ Goal Sinks Chiefs

Mark Deyell scored 6:43 into the third period to give the Saskatoon Blades a 4-3 victory over the visiting Spokane Chiefs Wednesday night.

Deyell’s score came just 1:15 after Spokane’s Dimitri Leonov knotted the game 3-3 on a breakaway goal.

It was the Chiefs fourth loss in the last five games, dropping them to 11-6.

Spokane jumped out to a 1-0 lead when Jason Podollan’s slap shot found its way between the legs of Saskatoon goalie Randy Weinberger 17:56 into the first period.

The Blades responded with two quick goals in the second period. Martin Sonnenberg and Clarke Wilm scored 16 seconds apart, the first coming at 6:46.

The Chiefs’ Greg Leeb knotted the game at 2-2 with a goal at 9:05 in the second, his sixth goal in three games. Leeb took a rink-wide pass from Randy Favaro and worked around defenseman Wade Belak for the score.

Paul Buczowski put Saskatoon in the lead once again, scoring at 11:16 in the second.

Goaltender Randy Weinberger made 29 saves for Saskatoon while David Lemanowicz and Aren Miller turned away 25 shots for Spokane.

The Blades won at home for just the third time in eight games and improved to 9-12.

Spokane’s next game will be Friday when it visits the Eastern Division leading Brandon Wheat Kings.
