Sarah Hiss Lewis And Clark Year: Senior Sport: Volleyball Position: Outside Hitter

Sarah Hiss never heard her coach tell teammate Ingrid Lindeblad to feed her every set down the stretch to the state tournament.

“I never felt nervous,” Hiss said. “It didn’t make a difference to me, it was a whole team effort.”

That responsibility just goes with the territory.

“I knew that I’d have to step up, being a senior, from my role last year,” Hiss said. “Not necessarily by being a team leader but in my play, having responsibilities on the court.”

Buzzie Welch agreed and that’s why he asked his only two seniors, Lindeblad and Hiss, to carry the Lewis and Clark Tigers back to the State AAA volleyball tournament.

They did, with Lindeblad’s assist on a powerful kill by Hiss providing the final point that provided that state berth.

“I don’t think we looked that far ahead at the beginning,” Hiss said. “We knew with the people we had on the team we could come together, it was just a question of when.

“All season we’ve been working towards (state). Basically, once (the underclassmen) got the confidence, knew they could do it, we finally put it all together towards the end of the season.”

The timing was perfect, and there’s no reason to quit now.

“I think we have a good shot,” Hiss said. “That’s what our goal is, to make it to Saturday.”
