Mother Casts Off Her Killer Son
Just as Israel’s hearts had all they could take, a mother broke them all over again Thursday.
In tears, Geula Amir cast off her son - the son who killed Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin.
“He’s gone out of his house, not from my heart. But he’s put himself beyond the bounds of this house. Today he’s not mine anymore. Gali’s not mine,” the mother said in an Israeli TV interview.
Yigal “Gali” Amir, 25, confessed to the assassination, saying God ordered him to do it. Older brother Hagai, 27, is being held in connection with the killing.
The Amirs live in the northern Tel Aviv suburb of Herzliya. Geula Amir is a beloved nursery school teacher. Her husband is a Bible scribe.
“Everyday, day after day, he got love from us, warmth from us, he got values from us, security, honesty, he got everything. He has betrayed us. He has betrayed us to an extent that you can’t imagine,” she said.
The mother ended with a message for Rabin’s widow Leah:
“My heart weeps. My heart will weep for many years yet. I will take this to the grave with me. … I hope that God will comfort you and your family and that you know no more pain because your pain is not just your pain, it’s everybody’s pain.”
Her voice rose to a shout: “And the worst pain is that it was my son who did it.”
