Sheriff’s Deputy Shot In Gunfight

Two men, one a Bonner County deputy, were wounded in a gunfight Sunday night off Samuels Road, about 14 miles north of Sandpoint.

Two Bonner County deputies were responding to an aggravated assault report when they were shot at.

Deputies saw several men burning clothes and other property belonging to a woman who reported the fight.

After one of the deputies said he was from the sheriff’s department, the men opened fire. One bullet hit the deputy’s arm, went through the flesh and struck the chest portion of his bullet-proof vest.

Authorities did not release the name of the officer, but said he was released after treatment at a hospital.

The officers returned fire and struck one of the three suspects in the leg and hip before they surrendered.

The men, whose names were not released, were in Bonner County Jail.
