Driver Survives Crash Into Power Pole

A Spokane woman who slid her car into a power pole Monday night is in satisfactory condition, to the amazement of police and paramedics who showed up at the messy North Freya accident scene.

Lisa Desouza, 37, was speeding south on Freya shortly before 9 p.m., police said. She lost control of her Ford Mustang between Broad and Wellesley and skidded broadside into the pole.

The pole hit the driver’s side door and plunged nearly all the way through the car, Cpl. Harry Kennedy said.

“It’s amazing that she made it out alive,” he said. “An accident like that…should have killed her.”

It took two hours for paramedics to get Desouza out of her car. She was wearing her seat belt and police do not believe she had been drinking, Kennedy said.

Desouza suffered head and internal injuries and was taken to Sacred Heart Medical Center. She underwent surgery and was “recovering well” late Tuesday, a hospital spokeswoman said. , DataTimes
