Ehlo Steals, Then Cans 2 To Pace Win

Craig Ehlo broke up a pass and made two free throws with 10.2 seconds left in overtime Tuesday night as the Atlanta Hawks ended the New York Knicks’ five-game winning streak with a 102-97 victory in New York.

Patrick Ewing scored a season-high 35 points and had 10 rebounds but made the bad pass that Ehlo intercepted in the backcourt. Ewing was forced to foul and Ehlo made both free throws to seal the Hawks’ seventh win in 10 games.

The Knicks were cold during overtime, shooting 1 for 8, but Atlanta shot almost as poorly.

After the Hawks scored the first four points of the extra period, Ewing pulled the Knicks to 99-97 on a 10-footer. Steve Smith increased Atlanta’s margin when he made 1 of 2 free throws with 11.3 seconds left to put the Hawks up 100-97.

After going scoreless for 4:18 in the fourth quarter, the Hawks forced overtime on two consecutive baskets by Mookie Blaylock, the last putting Atlanta up 95-93. Ewing tied the game again with a pair of free throws with 52.9 seconds left.

After a timeout, Smith missed a running jumper in the lane and Ewing grabbed the rebound with 3.6 seconds to play and called timeout. The best shot the Knicks could get was Derek Harper’s 25-foot air ball as time expired.

Armon Gilliam grabbed 16 rebounds and scored 17 points, including two key baskets and a free throw down the stretch to lead New Jersey.

The Nets, who are unbeaten at home but have lost all eight of their road games, trailed Washington 76-75 after Robert Pack hit a driving layup with 5:28 to play.

But New Jersey, which is allowing opponents just 82 points per game in their victories, scored the next five points on a Gilliam jumper and a 3-point play by Chris Childs.

Calbert Cheaney scored on a drive to pull the Bullets to 80-78 with 4:07 to play, but P.J. Brown and Kenny Anderson replied with baskets to make it 84-80. The Bullets again rallied, pulling to 86-84 on a Juwan Howard jumper with 33.7 seconds remaining.

Gilliam then wrapped up the scoring with a jump shot and a free throw.
