Gonzaga’s Joy Pauley hit the go-ahead layup with 1 minute, 30 seconds left and Chelsea Herman iced it with two free throws with 15 seconds remaining as the Bulldogs edged the Idaho Vandals 62-58 in a non-conference women’s basketball game at Memorial Gym in Moscow, Idaho, on Tuesday.

Idaho failed to score in the final 2:30, committing three turnovers in their final four possessions to lose its season opener.

Pauley led the Bulldogs with 20 points and eight rebounds while center Amy Jo Silva added 11 points and seven rebounds for Gonzaga (1-2).

Idaho was led by sophomore guard Kelli Johnson’s 14 points. Junior guard Ari Skorpik came off the bench to add 11 points.

The Vandals have not won a season opener since 1990-91.

“We can’t have three turnovers in our last three possessions,” said Vandals coach Julie Holt.

“We never gave up,” said Gonzaga coach Kellee Barney. “Idaho is very scrappy, competitive and aggressive. We just kept battling and came away winners.”

The Vandals led 51-44 with 8:30 left in the game.

GU answered with a 9-0 run to grab a 53-51 lead. Amy Jo Silva scored five straight points during the spree.

Tanya Kirk scored 19 points and Shawna Rainer added 14 as visiting North Idaho College (6-0) rallied to beat the Community Colleges of Spokane (0-1) in a non-league game.

The Cardinals trailed 55-52 with 3 minutes remaining, but capitalized on three consecutive Sasquatch turnovers to take a commanding 58-55 lead.

CCS outrebounded NIC 49-30, but the Sasquatch committed 26 turnovers.

Kelly Gaines led CCS in scoring with 17 points.
