Umass Catches Fire Early, Knocks Off No. 1 Kentucky

Marcus Camby had 32 points, nine rebounds and five blocks Tuesday night as No. 5 Massachusetts beat Kentucky 92-82 in Auburn Hills, Mich., the second year in a row the Minutemen opened the season by knocking off the top-ranked team in the country.
Last year, Massachusetts pounded defending national champion Arkansas 104-80.
Massachusetts used one of Kentucky’s favorite tactics, the press, to open an 18-point lead midway through the first half.
But the Wildcats, getting two 3-pointers by Tony Delk and one each from Allen Edwards and Walter McCarty, battled back for a 45-45 halftime tie.
The Minutemen opened the second half with an 11-1 run and led the rest of the way.
Delk had 21 points and McCarty, who was 4 of 4 from 3-point range, added 17 for the Wildcats.

In Memphis, center Lorenzen Wright scored 36 points and grabbed 18 rebounds to lead the Tigers to a victory over Jackson State.
Wright connected on 12 of 23 from the field and 12 of 18 from the freethrow line to lead the attack.

Darryl Wilson scored 18 points to lead four Mississippi State players in double figures as the Bulldogs pulled away from visiting North Carolina-Wilmington for a victory.

In Iowa City, Russ Millard powered inside for 22 points and 10 rebounds, and Chris Kingsbury came off the bench to score 14 points, including four 3-pointers, to pace the Hawkeyes’ rout of Drake.

In Chapel Hill, N.C., Shammond Williams converted a three-point play and Dante Calabria scored eight points in a critical stretch of the second half, helping the Tar Heels hold off the Spiders.

Ace Custis scored 19 points, including five dunks, to lead the Hokies to a win over Coastal Carolina in Blacksburg, Va.

At Auburn Hills, Mich., Jon Garavaglia scored six of his 14 points down the stretch as Michigan State defeated Arkansas in the first game of the Great Eight basketball festival.
