Gsl At A Glance

Mead 28, North Central 0

Key plays

NC quarterback Mike Cabellaro was called for intentional grounding on a long pass just before he was sacked, backing up the Indians to their 12. On the next play, Koley Shankle picked off a Cabellaro pass, setting up the Panthers on the 16. Two plays later, Nate Adams hit Adam Morris for a 14-yard touchdown.

Stars of the game

Morris had a 64-yard punt return for a TD, but had a 41-yarder to the NC 1 and a 79-yarder for a TD wiped out by clipping penalties. He still had 189 all-purpose yards - 109 on punt returns, 25 on two pass receptions and 54 on seven carries. He had all four Mead TDs.

Notable

Morris moved into the top 10 in career receiving with an 11-yard reception in the second quarter. That gave him 873 yards, moving him past Carlos Galland of Ferris (1985-87) and Craig Hawkins (1979-80) of University (869)…. The Panthers played without starting both starting inside linebackers, all-leaguer Larry Carnahan, who broke a hand last week, and Bo Chandler, who was lost for the season with a knee injury on the opening kickoff of the same game. Also out because of sprained ankles were starting quarterback Jason Lewis and starting receiver Jarrett Robbins. Also limited to special teams was starting defensive back Evan Thomas, who was sick all week. That all came the first week after the Panthers were healthy for the first time this season…. “Depth at the high school level is always precarious,” Mead coach Mike McLaughlin said. “The veterans rallied around the young guys. This was a real team victory.” … With a 22-8 win over the Panthers in 1993 wiped out by forfeit, NC has lost nine straight to Mead and 16 of 17 overall.

LC 40, G-Prep 20

Key play

Trailing 26-14 at halftime, the Bullpups intercepted Paul Mencke and moved from the LC 32 to a third-and-2 at the 6 when quarterback Mark Egger made a bad pitch on the option. The ball was knocked forward, with LC’s Dealy Etter recovering on the 1.

Stars of the game

Nate Smith and Dario Romario keyed a defense that throttled Prep’s running game, and Etter had two interceptions in the third quarter to go with the fumble recovery. The offensive line also came of age as the Tigers had 430 yards in total offense.

Notable

Mencke had 167 yards passing and TDs to three receivers and rushed for another score in the first half…. Prep had six snaps in the third quarter; three ended up as turnovers…. LC scored after three of the five Prep turnovers.

Next opponent

Prep has to play league-leading CV at 7:30 Thursday at Albi. LC has a bye.

Richland 50, Ferris 27
