North Central, G-Prep Storm Ahead In Volleyball

Two teams with mediocre histories continued to shine Friday in Greater Spokane League volleyball.

North Central (8-4), which finished third in 1981 and hasn’t reached that high since, solidified its third-place standing with a 12-15, 15-11, 15-6, 15-12 home win over fifth-place University (7-6).

Gonzaga Prep (12-0), which had never finished better than .500, beat visiting Central Valley 15-7, 9-15, 15-1, 15-9 to take a two-game lead.

G-Prep, Ferris (10-2) and NC have clinched three of the six spots to district.

Tamara Van Engelen and Aimee Wilson of NC combined for 42 kills. U-Hi’s Kristina McAuley had 17 kills.

Brandy Barratt had 20 kills and seven blocks for Prep, which was spurred by a 12-0 third-game start. Ginger Clark led CV (2-11) with eight kills, nine digs and six blocks.

Girls soccer

Jaclyn Burton assisted on two goals and Kellie Leaf scored her eighth and Katrina Morton her seventh as Mead moved closer to its 10th consecutive GSL title with a 3-0 home win over U-Hi.

The Panthers’ 38 points are seven ahead of the field with three matches to go. Mead has 12 regulation wins, one overtime win, and no regulation or overtime losses. U-Hi (7-0-1-5, 22) dropped to fifth.

At G-Prep, the host Bullpups (9-1-1-2, 30) won a shootout 3-1 to defeat Lewis and Clark after a 1-1 tie in regulation. Prep’s Caryn Nadeau scored at 17 minutes. Fourth-place LC (6-2-1-4, 23) scored an own-goal.

Holly Hyatt scored her seventh goal as visiting CV (6-0-3-5, 21) edged NC 1-0 at the Complex. Emily Jones of the Indians (1-2-0-11, 7) limited league No. 3 scorer Katie Carpenter to an assist.

At Rogers, Megan Cummings scored twice, giving her 11 for the year, as Ferris (9-2-0-2, 31) beat the Pirates 8-0 and stayed in second place. Arlene Dawe had 14 saves for Rogers (0-0-1-13, 1).
