Toughy’s Gold Claims All West Futurity

Toughy’s Gold, a $9,000 purchase at last fall’s All West Thoroughbred Yearling Sale, doubled that investment Sunday when he captured the $38,812 All West Futurity at Playfair Race Course.

Ridden by Robert Munoz, Toughy’s Gold led every step of the way while sprinting to a four-length victory. Invest In Festin, the even-money favorite, raced in second place throughout and crossed the finish line almost three lengths ahead of fast-closing Chivalry Isnotdead in a field of 10.

Toughy’s Gold ran six furlongs in 1:14-2/5 over a fast, but dull track. As the second choice, he paid $6 to win. The bay son of Tough Knight, whose son Run Tuffy Run won the race last fall, earned $20,835 for his owners, banker William C. “Bud” Dashiell and Playfair general manager Dan Hillyard.

Toughy’s Gold and Red Silver Hope, winner of Saturday’s filly division of the All West Futurity, remain in the running for the $100,000 Playfair Challenge Series bonus. The award will be paid to any eligible horse that can win a division of the All West Futurity, either the Juvenile His or Juvenile Hers Stakes and the Spokane Futurity.

Men’s soccer

Gonzaga’s Shaun Flanigan scored six minutes into the game, but host Santa Clara tied it late in the first half as the Bulldogs (0-2-1 WCC, 1-7-2 overall) and Broncos (7-2-2, 1-1-1) played to a 1-1 tie in a WCC match.

Santa Clara outshot Gonzaga 19-7 in a game that saw six players lost to injury, three for each team.

Women’s soccer

Amy Peterson and Stacy Dolder scored goals off corner kicks to lead Southern California to a 2-1 come-from-behind victory over the visiting Washington State Cougars in a Pac10 dual.

WSU defender Tina Walsh scored the Cougar’s (1-4, 2-10-1) lone goal as she rebounded a shot off the hands of USC (2-2, 7-5-1) goalkeeper Laura Badagliacco in the 27th minute. The goal was the first of the season for Walsh and snapped a string of 489 scoreless minutes for the Cougars.

Megan Keaty, a striker from Lewis and Clark High School, scored two goals and added an assist as Gonzaga dropped the host Utah Utes 3-2. Amie Gregary scored Gonzaga’s (2-11) other goal. The Utes are 7-4-2.

Marilyn Piduch and Jennifer Tissue scored goals for the visiting Whitworth Pirates (7-0-1 NCIC, 10-4-1) en route to a 2-0 win over Whitman.

Megan Troy had a goal and an assist to lead the Community Colleges of Spokane (2-4-0 NWAACC, 2-6-2) over Edmonds Community College 2-0 in conference play.

Hockey

Norm Lochten and Derek Ames had two goals each for the Spokane Braves, but that wasn’t enough as the Columbia Valley Rockies dropped the Braves 8-5 in a Kootenay International Junior Hockey League game at Eagles Ice-A-Rena.

Darin Talotti had three assists for Spokane (0-4-2).
