Fife Bests G-Prep For Volleyball Crown

The Greater Spokane League won the lion’s share of top placings at Saturday’s Crossover Classic volleyball tournament, but out-of-towner Fife took the top prize.

Fife, the top-ranked team in the Class AA ranks, beat GSL champion Gonzaga Prep 15-4, 15-10 in the final at Lewis and Clark.

GSL runner-up Ferris finished fourth after a 15-12 loss to Pasco in the consolation final.

Mead of the GSL edged Prairie from Brush Prairie, Wash., 15-12 in the match for fifth and sixth places.

The match for seventh and eighth, an all-GSL affair, went to Shadle Park, 15-0, 15-0 over North Central.

The placings for other GSL teams, in matches held at Shadle: University, ninth; LC, 12th; Central Valley, 13th; and Rogers, 15th.

In league-counting matches at the tournament, Ferris (12-3) clinched second place with a 15-12, 15-11, 15-12 win over NC (9-6) and a 15-5, 15-6, 15-5 win over CV (2-13); G-Prep (15-0) swept Rogers (2-13) 15-8, 15-3, 15-5; Shadle (5-10) came back for a 4-15, 15-10, 16-14, 15-8 win over Mead (5-10); and LC (10-5) took over third place with a 15-11, 11-15, 14-16, 16-14, 15-11 win over U-Hi (8-8).

Lea Ruhl had 12 kills and two aces, and Molly Jones 25 assists and 10 digs in Ferris’ win over NC. Heidi Greenwood’s 11 digs and four aces led the Indians.

Ruhl had 11 digs and four blocks in the win over CV. Crystal Lee’s nine kills, four blocks and 11 digs topped the Bears.

Brandy Barratt of G-Prep had 10 kills and eight blocks against Rogers, which was led by the eight kills and two blocks of Teana Scott.

Courtney Clary had 18 kills and 17 digs for Shadle, which trailed Mead 14-12 in the third game. Jessica Sanborn had 20 kills and two blocks, and Andrea Carnahan 26 assists and 12 digs for the Panthers.

Sarah Hiss had 13 kills, 23 digs and five blocks in LC’s win. Devon Bakken had 19 kills for the Titans, who completed their league season in a district-bound fifth place.

The league season ends Tuesday with Mead at Rogers, LC at CV, Shadle at Ferris and Prep at NC.

The District 8-AAA Tournament begins Thursday with loser-out matches at Spokane Falls Community College. No. 3 LC opens against No. 6 Mead or Shadle, while No. 4 NC plays No. 5 U-Hi. Prep and Ferris have byes until Friday.

Molly Fisher had 18 kills and 11 blocks, and Carisa Montez and Leah Hannan provided the defense as visiting Pullman (6-4) beat second-place East Valley 15-7, 11-15, 17-15, 15-10 to tie West Valley for third place in the Frontier League.

Loni Eastep added 34 assists and three aces for the Greyhounds, who have league champion Clarkston and WV left on their schedule. Angela Overdorff had 12 kills and four blocks for the Knights (7-3).

Pullman’s win also eliminated fifth-place Cheney from the district tournament.

Football

Shaun Moore had a team-high 118 receiving yards, 98 rushing yards and 14 tackles as second-ranked Pateros (4-0, 7-0) took control of the Northeast B-8 with a 44-25 win at fourth-ranked Inchelium (3-1, 5-1).

Patrick Hunter of the Billygoats threw five touchdown passes, including those of 29, 47 and 34 yards to Moore. Hunter completed 18 of 28 for 294 yards, with one interception.

Casey Finley of the Hornets rushed for 175 yards and two TDs on 26 carries, while Jason Schumacher had 10 carries for 65 yards.

Idaho volleyball

St. Maries beat host Lakeland 15-2, 15-13 in the A-2 Region I-II tournament championship match at Rathdrum.

The Lumberjacks (22-4) won their 15th consecutive regional title.

Lakeland (12-12) secured the region’s second state tournament berth with a 15-8, 15-5 win over Bonners Ferry. State opens Friday at Lake City High in Coeur d’Alene.
