The dollar rebounded a bit Tuesday from a big sell-off the day before, helped by the apparent threat of German central bank intervention to defend the U.S. currency in the foreign exchange market.

The German threat suggested a reversal of position by the powerful Bundesbank and forced traders who had been short of dollars to buy them.

In late New York trading, the dollar ended at 1.3940 marks, up from its two-month low of 1.3865 reached late Monday. It also rose to 100.45 yen, up from 99.85 yen.
