Mead Earns District Spot; Shadle Out

Mead filled out the District 8-AAA volleyball field after Tuesday’s 16-14, 15-7, 11-15, 15-11 Greater Spokane League season-ending win at Rogers.

Jessica Sanborn had 11 kills, eight digs and four blocks for Mead (6-10), which edged out five-time state champion Shadle Park (5-11) for the sixth and final spot to district. Shadle lost at Ferris, 11-15, 15-7, 15-8, 15-11.

Rogers (2-14) led Mead 12-7 and 14-11 in the first game before letting it slip away. Teana Scott had 16 kills and nine blocks for the Pirates, who rallied from 11-5 down to win the third game.

Shadle didn’t go quietly, coming back from a 10-3 first-game deficit to win and tying the fourth game at 10 after trailing 8-0. Courtney Clary had 18 digs and 15 kills for the Highlanders; Molly Jones had 32 assists and 26 digs for the runner-up Saxons (13-3).

Elsewhere, Molly Bloom had five kills and three blocks as league champ Gonzaga Prep (16-0) wrapped up its perfect season with a 15-1, 15-5, 15-8 win at North Central.

Fourth-place NC (9-7) played without eight varsity members, who were benched for walking out on two matches at Saturday’s Crossover Classic in order to attend a homecoming dance. The players will return for district.

Sarah Hiss had 13 kills and five blocks for third-place Lewis and Clark (11-5), which beat host Central Valley 15-9, 15-12, 15-6. Crystal Lee had 13 digs and nine kills for the Bears (2-14).

In Thursday’s district loser-out matches at Spokane Falls Community College, No. 3 LC plays No. 6 Mead and No. 4 NC plays No. 5 University (8-8). The winners, plus G-Prep and Ferris begin playing Friday for seeding to the regional tournament.

Frontier League champ Clarkston trailed 12-9 in the first game and 6-1 in the third, but beat host Pullman 17-15, 15-6, 15-6 to complete its league season 12-0. Loni Eastep had 16 assists and 14 digs for the Greyhounds (6-5), who slipped into fourth place with one match to go.

Arin Craig had 10 kills and 13 blocks as visiting West Valley (7-4) beat Cheney 12-15, 15-5, 16-14, 15-11 to move into third place alone. Anna Getz had eight kills for the Blackhawks (3-8), who tied the final game at 14 after trailing by eight.

Angela Overdorff had six kills and five blocks, and Farrah Parsley six blocks and five kills in second-place East Valley’s 15-4, 15-11, 15-10 win over visiting Riverside (0-11). Deborah Asbury added five aces and five kills for the Knights (8-3).

Garfield-Palouse won twice at Oakesdale to earn the No. 4 seed and oust LaCrosse-Washtucna and Rosalia from the Whitman County playoffs.

Sally Palmer had 12 assists and four kills to lead Tekoa-Oakesdale over Rosalia. The Nighthawks advance to Thursday’s play at St. John as No. 3. St. John-Endicott is No. 1, Colton No. 2.

Brenda Rohner had nine kills and five blocks as Reardan beat visiting Almira/Coulee-Hartline 15-4, 15-7 in a Bi-County League tiebreaker for second place.

Reardan plays league champ Wilbur-Creston on Saturday at Odessa for the top two seeds to the District 7-B Tournament. The double-elimination portion of the league tournament begins Thursday at Odessa. ACH plays No. 6 Davenport, while No. 4 Odessa plays No. 5 Ritzville.

Visiting Colfax (12-0) beat second-place Deer Park (11-2) 15-9, 15-12, 15-1 to all but wrap up the Northeast A League title.

Girls soccer

Linsay Porter secured a deflection off a defender and scored the lone goal in EV’s 1-0 Frontier League season-ending win at Cheney (6-5-1).

The Knights (9-1-2) tied Deer Park/Riverside for the title and advanced to the District 7-AA playoffs as the No. 2 seed. EV and DP/R split this year, but the Knights scored fewer goals in the matches.

Katie Bowers had three goals and one assist in DP/ R’s 11-0 win at Colville (2-9-1). Jill Thompson added one goal and two assists.

Gabrielle McClintock had three goals and one assist as WV (8-1-3) steamed toward the playoffs with a 7-0 win over visiting Pullman (0-11-1). Katie Snow added a goal and three assists.

In district loser-out matches Saturday at either Deer Park or Riverside, No. 1 DP/R plays No. 4 Cheney, while No. 2 EV plays No. 3 WV.
