A northeastern Washington public utility district has agreed to settle an $18,000 environmental penalty by taking steps to improve fish habitat in a local creek, the state Department of Ecology said Tuesday.

In lieu of paying the fine to the state, Pend Oreille County PUD No. 1 secured tree roots, placed boulders and installed log structures on the bank of Sullivan Creek, the department said. The project is designed to improve summer rearing habitat and shelter for juvenile and adult fish.

The agency fined the PUD in January for erosion-control violations that occurred when the utility district rehabilitated the Lake Sullivan Dam. The department said fish habitat and water quality were damaged. The restoration was completed Sept. 30. , DataTimes
