Sentencing For Killer Of Selena Bogs Down

Compiled From Wire Services

Sentencing for the woman who killed Tejano singing star Selena bogged down Tuesday as lawyers argued over whether the jury should be allowed to consider claims the woman embezzled money from the singer’s boutiques.

The jury that on Monday found Yolanda Saldivar guilty of murdering Selena must hear further testimony before deciding her punishment. Possible sentences range from probation to life in prison, which would mean at least 30 years behind bars.

But State District Judge Mike Westergren sent jurors home after only about two hours, without hearing any testimony, as attorneys argued. They were told to return today. Westergren has not said when he will rule on the dispute.
