Lc, G-Prep Win In Gsl Volleyball

Sophomore Erin Naipo guided Lewis and Clark to the first upset of the Cavanaugh’s Inns/Greater Spokane League District volleyball tournament.

Naipo had 13 kills and 15 digs Friday as the Tigers surprised Ferris 15-10, 15-8, 13-15, 15-12 during the tournament’s second evening at Spokane Falls Community College.

Ferris, seeded second into the tourney, beat third-seeded LC both times during the regular season.

In the night’s second match, Brandy Barratt had 26 kills and five blocks as league champion Gonzaga Prep swept fourth-seeded North Central 17-15, 15-6, 15-13.

The tourney, for seeding to next weekend’s regional tournament in Wenatchee, concludes today at SFCC. Ferris and NC play at 1 p.m., with the loser heading to region as No. 4. LC and Prep meet at 3, with the winner advancing to the championship match at 7 and the loser meeting the Ferris-NC winner at 5. Any team can still win the title.

Blocks by Naipo and Shannon Snow gave the Tigers the first-game lead for good, at 10-7. LC followed with a 5-0 lead in the second game.

Ferris led the third game 7-3 before falling behind 11-8. The Saxons scored six consecutive points, then Molly Jones’ kill halted an LC rally. The Tigers rebounded from a 10-2 fourth-game deficit.

Jones had 30 assists and 24 digs.

In the late match, the Bullpups had seven unforced errors in the finale that allowed the Indians to tie the game after trailing 11-2.

Story Tombari had 36 assists for Prep. Tamara Van Engelen led NC with 15 kills, six blocks and two aces.
