Kleska, Davis Key Oregon Sweep

Led by individual champion Karl Kleska and Mead alumnus Matt Davis, Oregon swept the Pac-10 cross country titles Saturday at the Stanford University Golf Course.

Kleska covered the 8,000-meter course in 24:14, while Davis finished fourth in 24:32. The highest WSU finisher was senior George Loucaides, who finished ninth in 24:56.

Kristin Lieblich led the WSU women, finishing 14th in 17:37. As a team, the WSU men finished sixth and the women finished seventh.

The Gonzaga women’s cross country team captured its first West Coast Conference Championship by upsetting Portland in Belmont, Calif. The GU men finished second to the 17-time defending champion Pilots.

Freshman Katie Owen placed third in 18:52, leading a group of four GU finishers in the meet’s top 10. The men were led by seniors Daniel Ourada, who placed eighth in 26:12.

Nick Rogers and Jon Murray finished first and second for Eastern Washington to lead the Eagles to a win at the Montana Invitational at the UM golf course.

Rogers finished in 25:29, while Murray finished in 25:42. Eastern’s Tyson Estes finished fourth in 25:53.

The Idaho women accomplished a similar feat, taking the top seven places at the Bigfoot Invitational at Spokane Falls. Vandal Maggie Hurst won the event in 19:08. Amanda Bjur of Whitworth finished 13th in 21:47.

Josh Muxen of CCS won in 26:15. Darren Thompson of CCS finished fourth in 26:45 as CCS won the meet.

Soccer

Haley Nichols scored inside the first 8 minutes of the game and added another goal and an assist as Whitworth (9-1-1, 12-5-1) defeated Pacific Lutheran (5-5-1, 11-6-1) 5-0. Jennifer Tissue, the NCIC’s leading scorer, also scored for Whitworth, which must win today against Pacific to clinch first place in the NCIC and home-field advantage in the playoffs.

PLU defeated the Whitworth men 5-3 as the Lutes scored three second-half goals in 3 minutes to rally from a 3-2 deficit. Matt Kinder scored twice for third-place Whitworth (6-5, 8-7-1), which holds a half-game lead over PLU (5-5-1, 8-8-2).

CCS and Skagit Valley battled to a scoreless tie in NWAACC play. R.J. Merritt had 14 saves for CCS.

The CCS women edged Shoreline 1-0 as Nicole Hays scored on an assist from Kerri Stockwell at the 82-minute mark.

Volleyball

Pepperdine rallied to beat Gonzaga 15-1, 13-15, 10-15, 15-14, 16-14 in WCC play. Jennifer Kubista had 16 kills for GU (1-8, 3-23).

CCS finished second at the Mt. Hood Classic, defeating Green River (15-12, 15-13), Malaspinina (15-13, 15-13) and Columbia Basin (15-12, 15-13) before falling to Mt. Hood (15-10, 8-15, 14-16) in the final. Stephanie Short, a Shadle Park alumnus, led CCS with 41 kills in four matches.

Washington rallied from a 3-9 deficit in the third game to sweep visiting EWU 15-6, 15-7, 15-13 in non-conference play.
