‘Mtv Mega-Dose’ Looks At Modern Health Care Problems

M. Mindy Moretti The Washington Post

MTV seizes upon the prominence of health issues in the news with a half-hour special, “MTV Mega-Dose,” running Monday night at 10:30.

Hosted by U.S. National Soccer Team player Cobi Jones, the show takes a different look at body care in the ‘90s, examining issues that young Americans consider often, like piercing their navels or choosing tofu over ground beef.

“The world is a different place nowadays, and a lot of (issues) differ totally from an MTV point of view,” explained producer Cathe Neukum.

With that MTV perspective in mind, Neukum and her crew set out to produce a show that looks at all sides of the health issues involved. Not only did they talk to young people directly concerned with these issues, they also spoke to people on the medical and legal sides.

The show is divided into six segments, with topics including vegetarianism, herbal highs found at raves and body piercing and tattooing. “A lot of it’s personal interest for the people who work here,” Neukum said.

Neukum said that shows such as “Mega-Dose” are an important tool in the teaching of America’s youth. “I just hope people think about things they do in a different way. It’s all about thinking and making sound choices.”

The show’s tone was a major concern for Neukum. “With so many shows, you can’t be preachy. If you start talking down, people will turn off,” she said. “There is no judgment in this show. A lot of the segments have to do with tips and advice.”
