School Gives Griz Receiver Probation For Drug Incident

From Wire Reports

University of Montana football receiver Trevor Woods was placed on probation by the school after pleading guilty in municipal court to possessing marijuana and drug paraphernalia in the team dormitory.

Woods told coach Don Read he hadn’t smoked marijuana, but was in a room early Aug. 22 when student assistant coaches Keith Burke and Damon Boddie used the drug.

Read said Woods pleaded guilty “just to get the thing done with.”

Burke and Boddie were dismissed from their coaching duties. In separate conversations with Read, both said Woods had not smoked marijuana with them.

“Don and I mutually agreed that putting him on probation was what we wanted to do,” interim athletic director Kathy Noble said. “We’ve put him on notice that any future incidents of the same nature will be dealt with severely.”

Woods, a sophomore from Diamond Bar, Calif., who transferred from Ohio University last semester, has not missed any practices and is eligible to play today when Montana faces Eastern New Mexico.

Hilde will stay, if …

Boise State quarterback Tony Hilde will keep his scholarship and his spot on the Broncos football team as long as he keeps his cool, school officials say.

The junior from Pendleton, Ore., has been charged with five misdemeanors and one driving infraction in the past 36 days.

Hilde, 21, was placed on team probation Monday after drinking one beer - a violation of team rules - and scuffling with Boise police officers last weekend.

On Wednesday, authorities in Asotin County, Wash., said Hilde was charged with obstruction of justice after he and a friend lied to police about their involvement in a head-on car accident July 28.

Gators charged

Four Florida football players, including running back Fred Taylor and receiver Reidel Anthony, were charged with misdemeanors alleging they illegally used a debit card to buy pizzas.

Also charged were reserves Jamie Richardson, a freshman receiver, and defensive back Teako Brown, who already was suspended for today’s season opener against Houston after being accused of hitting his girlfriend.

In addition, two other players, defensive end Johnie Church and defensive lineman Ernie Badeaux, have been suspended for unnamed off-the-field incidents.

Coach Steve Spurrier said Taylor, Anthony and Richardson would play against Houston despite the latest incident.
