Tom Mckern Appointed To Colleges Trustee Board

Tom McKern, a rancher and a Stevens County commissioner from 1987 to 1994, has been appointed by Gov. Mike Lowry as a member of the Community Colleges of Spokane Board of Trustees.

McKern served in the Army and was a member of the 101st Airborne in Vietnam, where he earned a Bronze Star for Valor and a Purple Heart.

He is a 1960 graduate of Kettle Falls (Wash.) High School and a 1965 graduate of Washington State University.

His board term will run through September 1999.

Chris Cael, Spokane, was selected by the Hugh O’Brian Youth Foundation as one of the nation’s most promising young leaders. Cael and 200 other students from every state and 34 nations attended the annual eight-week World Leadership Congress last July.

Rheanna Kaley, 4, daughter of Bill and Lisa Kaley, Spokane, was a state finalist in the Miss Washington American Princess Pageant in Seattle.

Melissa Jones, daughter of Mona Muster and Bob Patterson, Spokane, was a finalist in the 1995 Pre-Teen Washington Scholarship and Recognition Program in Pasco.

Desiree Sargent Sawyer, 11, daughter of Tim and Karen Sawyer, Spokane, was a state finalist in the Miss Washington American PreTeen Pageant in Seattle. She is a student at Trentwood Elementary.

Melissa Krough, 18, daughter of Darin and Leslie Krough, Cheney, represented Washington state in the 12th-annual Miss Teen of America Program in San Diego. She is a graduate of Cheney High School.

Chelsea Mullins, 7, daughter of Tammy and Bryan Yarbrough, Liberty Lake, and Al Mullins, Spokane, was a state finalist in the Miss Washington American Pageant in Seattle.

Petty Officer 3rd Class Eric James Codd, son of Jim Codd, Spokane, graduated from the U.S. Navy Nuclear Power Program and is stationed aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise, based in Norfolk, Va.

James Dempsey, Kennewick, received $1,000 in the Hammacher Schlemmer’s Search for Invention ‘95 contest. His product, a water conserving plant feeder, won Outstanding Invention in the Utilitarian Home and Garden category.

Inland Power & Light’s magazine, Inland Country, received the Award of Excellence from the Council of Rural Electric Communicators in the Best Newspaper/Magazine Category. Inland Country’s editor is Yvonne Lopez Morton.

Bonnie Sheridan and Mae Schaeffer, members of Spokane Communications, the local chapter of International Training in Communication, won top honors in ITC’s Snake River Region writing contest.

Sheridan won first place in the poetry division, and Schaeffer took second place in poetry.
