O’Meara Beats Lohr In Canadian Playoff After Strong Charge

Compiled From Wire Services

Hard-charging Mark O’Meara played mistake-free golf in a stirring match with his friend Bob Lohr, winning the Canadian Open when Lohr bogeyed the first playoff hole Sunday at Oakville, Ontario.

It was the second PGA Tour victory of the season for the unflappable O’Meara, who shot a bogey-free, final-round 67 for 14-under-par 274 at Glen Abbey Golf Club in the suburbs of Toronto.

Lohr, who took a three-stroke lead into Sunday’s fourth round, had three bogeys in his round of 70, but birdied three of the final four holes to force the playoff. Two of Lohr’s bogeys came in a three-hole stretch of the five valley holes, where O’Meara charged into a three-stroke lead with five holes to play.

Their closest pursuers included defending champion Nick Price, Hal Sutton, Bob Tway and Andrew Magee.

At Porthcawl, Wales, Britain and Ireland won the Walker Cup for the first time at home in 24 years, defeating the United States team 14-10 in a raindrenched final program. Britain and Ireland surpassed the 12 points needed for victory when England’s David Howell sank a 6-foot putt to defeat Notah Begay 2 and 1 after 17 holes.

At Stockholm, Sweden, Liselotte Neumann birdied the last hole for a one-shot victory over U.S. Women’s Open champion Annika Sorenstam in the Trygg Hansa Open golf tournament. Neumann finished the European Tour event at 281, 11 under par. She closed with a 72, her worst round on the Haninge course, south of Stockholm.

Tracy Hanson of Rathdrum, Idaho, shot a third-round 71 to finish with a 213, which tied her for sixth place with three other.

Clarkston’s Robin Walton endured her worst round of the tournament, shooting 76 to finish at 221.

Walter Morgan won his first Senior PGA Tour title, shooting a 5-under-par 67 for a three-stroke victory over Dave Stockton in the GTE Northwest Classic at Kenmore, Wash.

Glen Hnatiuk made a 6-foot birdie putt on the first hole of a playoff with Franklin Langham and Harry Rudolph to win the Nike Utah Classic in Provo. He finished with a 2-under-par 70 to tie Langham (66) and Rudolph (67) at 13-under 203 on the Riverside Country Club course.
