Scott Has 66 To Lead Pro-Am

Bob Scott was not a very hospitable host to the other 48 pros and 198 amateurs in the Washington Trust Bank Pro-Am Monday at Liberty Lake Golf Course.

Scott, the Liberty Lake pro, took advantage of his knowledge to carve four strokes off par for a 33-33-66 and his first outright win of the season in the Pro-Am series.

Paul McCarthy of Lewiston (36-31) and Dan Porter of Downriver (33-34) had 67s to share second.

Twelve pros broke par, including seniors Ken Johnston of Sun Dance (33-35), who knocked in his second shot on the par 4 9th hole (his 18th) for a 68 that bested Larry Becker of Wandermere (35-34) by a stroke.

Amateur gross honors were shared by Matt Johnston of Painted Hills (34-35) and Ray Kennedy of Esmeralda (36-33) at 69.

Les Mueller of Chewelah also shot a 69, but he opted for the net division and the 8-handicapper shared first there with Phil Hauck of Wandermere with adjusted scores of 64.

Next week’s Pro-Am will be at the Coeur d’Alene Golf Club. The Pro-Senior will be Sept. 25 at Hayden Lake, with shotgun starts at 7:30 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Kellie Leaf scored two goals, the second unassisted in the 31st minute, as Mead bested Ferris 2-1 in an aggressive Greater Spokane League girls soccer match under the lights at Mead Junior High.

Four minutes after Leaf’s second goal, Angela Faridnia scored on a penalty kick for Ferris, but the Saxons couldn’t get the equalizer through a scoreless second half.

In other matches, Central Valley bested Shadle Park 3-1 on goals by Holly Huatt, Courtney Phinney and Katie Carpenter; Danielle Mariabell had three goals and an assist as Gonzaga Prep whipped short-staffed North Central 6-0; and Brook Fredrickson and Jessica Fransen scored twice each for Lewis and Clark in a 7-0 win over Rogers.

Kristen Hawley scored for Shadle at the 52-minute mark to get within 2-1, but Carpenter’s goal in the 75th minute iced it for CV. NC, down to just 12 players, didn’t get a shot on goal while G-Prep got off 32 against NC keeper Kami McGowan. Angie Vulcano had a strong game in goal for Rogers, making nine saves, two on breakaways in the second half.

Men’s soccer

Gonzaga University had the offensive opportunities, but in the end it was the play of Oregon State keeper Colin McMillen that held the Bulldogs in check as the teams battled to a 1-1 overtime tie at Martin Field.

Jeff McAllister took an Octavio Dovalle pass and beat McMillen at 21:19 for the Gonzaga (0-1-1) goal.

OSU (1-1-2) tied the match at 38:15 when Gonzaga gave up the ball when a player cut the wrong way on a throw-in. Jeremiah Dodson got the ball alone in front of Gonzaga keeper David Lesser for the easy goal.

College volleyball

Wendy Wilson’s service ace tied the decisive fifth game and Montana bungled the return on Wilson’s next serve as Gonzaga pulled out a 12-15, 15-13, 5-15, 16-14, 15-13 win over the Grizzlies in Missoula.
