Council Considers Lease For More Softball Fields Meeting On The Move To Northeast Community Center

UNPUBLISHED CORRECTION: The proposed softball fields would be located near Holland Road and Colton Street.

Play ball. Softball, that is.

The Spokane City Council moves to the Northeast Community Center tonight to consider a proposed lease that could put six new softball fields in Spokane.

The council meeting begins at 6 p.m. at the center, 4001 N. Cook.

The Spokane Metropolitan Softball Association wants to lease 31 acres of park property from the city for 20 years with a shot at two fiveyear renewals.

In return, the association would develop the land near Holton Avenue and Colton Road, just east of the Division Street Y, into six softball fields.

The proposal includes plans for a concession stand and a 331-space parking lot. All six fields would be fenced, lighted and have covered dugouts and bleaches.

The plan also calls for nine automatic batting cages.

The Parks Department bought the land - once a sewer lagoon - from the Wastewater Management Department.

Council members also will:

Hear a report from residents on the status of northeast Spokane neighborhoods.

Consider a $9,000 contract change to the Wall Street Trolley project, bringing the total cost to about $1.4 million.

A briefing for residents begins at 3 p.m. at the center. The council’s briefing starts at 3:30 p.m.
