Sampras, Agassi Combination Too Much For Swedish Team In Davis Cup Semifinals

Compiled From Wire Services

Andre Agassi and Pete Sampras rolled to wins to give the United States a commanding 2-0 lead after the first day of the best-of-five match against Sweden in the Davis Cup semifinals.

Agassi beat 31-year-old Mats Wilander 7-6 (7-5), 6-2, 6-2 while Sampras needed one more set to dispose of Thomas Enqvist, 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, to move the United States within one win of the Davis Cup final with three matches remaining.

The United States can advance to the Davis Cup final against Russia or Germany if the doubles team of Todd Martin and Jonathan Stark beats Jonas Bjorkman and Stefan Edberg today.
