UW Bites Gu In A Canine Clash

Matt Carnell scored one goal and assisted on another Sunday as the Washington Huskies shutout the Gonzaga Bulldgos 3-0 in a men’s soccer match at GU’s Martin Field.

The loss dropped Gonzaga to 1-4-1 while Washington improved to 4-2-1.

Gonzaga outshot Washington 10-7, but Bill May had seven saves in the Washington goal to stop the Zags.

Mark Reid and Andy Kirkpatrick each scored a goal as Skagit Valley beat visiting CCS 2-0 in an NWAACC battle.

Whitworth grabbed its first win of the year with a 1-0 win over Concordia. The Pirates are now 0-1 in the NCIC, 1-3-1 overall.

Women’s soccer

Amy Chippendale scored a pair of second-half goals as the Washington State Cougars stopped a four-game losing streak, beating the University of Arizona 4-1.

Tina Walsh and Shalli DeWitt also scored as the Cougars (1-1 Pac10, 2-4-1) picked up their first Pac-10 victory.

Haley Nichols had two goals and an assist and Jen Tissue also had two goals as visiting Whitworth (2-0 NCIC, 5-4) dropped Concordia 6-2.

Elizabeth Ransom scored the game-winning goal at the 64-minute mark to give the Highline Thunderbirds a 2-1 win over the host Community Colleges of Spokane in a NWAACC league match.

Playfair

Lingerhof, a 10-1 outsider, overhauled pacesetting Run Tuffy Run in the final 100 yards for an upset victory at Playfair Race Course in the $6,400 City of Spokane Handicap.

GU to host hoop clinic

Oregon State University first-year men’s basketball coach Eddie Payne will be the featured speaker at the NIKE “A Day with the Bulldogs” basketball coaching clinic Oct. 28 at the Martin Centre on the Gonzaga University campus.

Payne will be joined by Jeff Reinland and Tom Aipperspach. Reinland is in his third year at Walla Walla Community College, while Aipperspach led Centennial High of Meridian, Idaho, to the 1995 Idaho State A-1 title with a 26-0 record.
