Yocum Helps UI Volleyball Sweep Zags

Jemena Yocum had 15 kills and a .650 hitting percentage Tuesday as the University of Idaho dominated host Gonzaga University 15-3, 15-8, 15-4 in a non-conference women’s volleyball match.

Idaho (13-2) swept the two-match season series. The Bulldogs (2-14) lost their seventh straight.

Yocum had six kills as the Vandals raced to a 13-0 lead in the first game. GU led the final game 3-1, but Idaho scored the next nine points. Nora Grasham and Diane Pascua led GU with four kills each.

Women’s soccer

National assists leader Shannon MacMillan had a goal and an assist as third-ranked Portland (8-0-1) defeated visiting Washington State 4-0 in a non-conference match.

Michelle French had a pair of second-half assists for Portland, the third-best scoring team in the nation.

Men’s soccer

GU goalkeeper David Lesser was named the West Coast Conference’s defensive player of the week after last Wednesday’s 3-0 shutout over UC Irvine.

Men’s golf

Medalist Sean Clements shot a final-round 73 to finish at 216 and lead Washington State to the team title at the Canadian International Invitational at Vancouver, British Columbia.

Women’s golf

Margaret Switzer tied for 21st with a 234 score and her WSU team tied for ninth at 963 at the Northwest Women’s Collegiate tournament in Corvallis, Ore.

Prep volleyball

Brandy Barratt’s 32 kills and 15 blocks helped first-place Gonzaga Prep (7-0) to a comeback 15-11, 12-15, 13-15, 15-9, 15-7 Greater Spokane League win at Mead.

Backup setter Erin Higgins had 40 assists and Molly Bloom 13 digs for the Bullpups. Mead (3-4) finished the third game with back-to-back kills by Staci Schuerman and Jessica Sanborn. Mead’s Kelly Benad and Jen Clark had 11 blocks apiece.

At Ferris, the second-place Saxons (6-1) tuned up for Thursday’s match with Prep by scoring 14 unanswered points in the fourth game to defeat Lewis and Clark 15-11, 12-15, 15-10, 15-5.

For Ferris, Missy Blackshire had 18 kills, five blocks and two aces, and Molly Jones 29 assists after returning from a sprained ankle. Erin Naipo had 12 kills and Ingrid Lindeblad 15 digs for the Tigers (4-3).

At Shadle Park, Angel Whalen had 52 assists and seven aces as University (5-2) won an 11-15, 15-12, 15-7, 11-15, 15-6 marathon from the Highlanders and jumped into third place.

Devon Bakken had 23 kills for U-Hi. Shae Sullivan had 10 kills and Molly Hathaway 17 assists for Shadle (1-7).

North Central (4-3) tied LC for fourth with a 15-6, 15-13, 15-8 win at Central Valley sparked by Tamara Van Engelen’s 16 kills and seven blocks.

NC suffered a blow when talented middle hitter Aimee Wilson dislocated her finger and was taken to the hospital. Crystal Lee had 12 kills and Ginger Clark eight digs for the Bears (1-5).

Amy Gelhausen’s 23 assists and four aces led visiting West Valley (3-1) to a 15-2, 15-3, 14-16, 15-3 Frontier League win at Pullman (3-2).

Arin Craig added 12 kills and five blocks for the Eagles. Molly Fisher led the Greyhounds with eight kills and 11 blocks.

At Chattaroy, Jennifer Quimby had 21 assists and four aces to guide Colville (2-4) to a 13-15, 15-9, 15-12, 15-10 win over Riverside (0-4).

Paige Quistad added 12 kills and Ann Marie Lofts 10 digs for Colville. Erin Nelson had eight kills, three aces and flour blocks for the Rams.

Kelli Haye served the final two points and East Valley (4-1) overcame a 12-7 third-game deficit to beat visiting Cheney 15-7, 15-4, 17-15. Farrah Parsley had seven kills and four blocks for the second-place Knights. Cheney is 0-4.

At Nine Mile, Colfax (4-0) beat host Lakeside 15-4, 13-15, 15-10, 15-10 to set up Thursday’s big Northeast A match with Deer Park (5-0). Sara Schumacher of Lakeside had 15 kills and 13 digs.

Frontier girls soccer

At East Valley, Licia Arnot’s early goal and Linsay Porter’s late score allowed the Knights (3-0-1) to defeat visiting Cheney 2-0 and jump over the Blackhawks (3-1-0) into second place.

At Pullman, Dawn Salfer’s unassisted goal from 30 yards out helped West Valley (3-1-1) beat the Greyhounds 1-0 and keep pace with EV. Pullman is 0-5-0.

At Chattaroy, host Deer Park/Riverside (4-0-0) continued to set the pace, as Bernice Stime had two goals and three assists in a 13-0 win over Colville (0-4-0).
