‘King Of The Hill’ To Be Decided

Paul Delaney Correspondent

In drag racing’s early days, arguments of who had the fastest car were often settled on a dark stretch of highway away from people - and the police.

The winner would be “King of the Hill.”

Spokane’s favorite place was to meet at the old Baker’s Beacon DriveIn at the base of the Division Street Hill and then proceed to the Seven Mile road down near the old dump.

The nineties version of “King of the Hill” takes place Sunday at Spokane Raceway Park and brings the curtain down on the 1995 racing season at SRP.

The fifth annual event will mix together cars and drivers in all bracket racing classes. Trophies will be awarded in all classes. Gates open at 10 a.m. with time trials at 10:30 and eliminations at 1:30.

Stateline closes season

The International Fall Classic, a two-day event that concludes with a demolition derby on Sunday, closes out the season at Stateline Speedway.

Saturday features racing in the Compacts, Fever Fours as well as a Hobby Car Shoot-Out. Time trials begin at 6 p.m. with racing at 7:30.

Sunday’s demo derby gets under way at 1 p.m. and is the fourth in a series.

Stateline finished its season points races earlier this month and will honor those racers at a banquet at Templins Resort in Post Falls on October 28th.

Hindley expects continued improvement in the performance of the boat, which made its first final heat appearance in San Diego two weeks ago.

“We’ve done some prop work, which will give the boat more punch out of the corners. We should qualify at over 150 (mph),” Hindley said.

Peterson wins divisional race

Jody Peterson of Spokane won the Super Street title in last Sunday’s NHRA Division Six race in Ashcroft, British Columbia. The win was Peterson’s first major NHRA victory. Rod Hoerner of Spokane finished third in Super Gas and moved into second place in division points. Hoerner now must decide if he’ll travel to races in Las Vegas and Phoenix to compete for points that might allow him to take over first place.

Sneva claims modified victory

Blaine Sneva took the lead on the 17th lap and went on to post his first Northwest Modified Series win of the season last Saturday at Stateline.

The win in the 75-lap Interstate Batteries Season Championship allowed Sneva to pocket $1,000 of the record $7,000 purse and finish his first season in the modifieds on a high note.

With a third place finish, Colville’s Greg Ochs wound up as the 1995 series points champion, edging Spokane’s Jeff Zimmerman by 20 points.
