Associated Press

American League

David Cone fought with his control, but limited the Cleveland Indians to two hits in seven scoreless innings as the New York Yankees beat the defending American League champions 7-1 Tuesday in Cleveland.

Derek Jeter and Bernie Williams homered for the Yankees, winners of five straight season openers and 10 of their last 11. The game was delayed one day by snow.

The Indians, who led the majors in runs, batting average and homers a year ago, were held hitless until Julio Franco led off the sixth with a single. They finished with four hits.

Orioles 4, Royals 2 Baltimore

Cal Ripken drove in three runs, and Mike Mussina allowed two runs and five hits over seven innings for Baltimore in beating Kevin Appier and Kansas City before 46,818 at Oriole Park.

The game, delayed a day because of rain, started shortly after President Clinton tossed a soft strike from the mound to Baltimore catcher Chris Hoiles.

Tigers 10, Twins 6 Minneapolis

Cecil Fielder had the first stolen base of his big-league career and Buddy Bell earned his first victory as a manager in the majors as Detroit beat Minnesota.

Brewers 15, Angels 9 Anaheim, Calif.

Jose Valentin and Chuck Carr each homered and had four of Milwaukee’s 22 hits as the Brewers trounced California.
